JUMP Day (Jump Up Middle School Participation) brought a change ten years ago to the way students look at the community and the way the community looks at students. One day (JUMP Day) each spring the students take a day away from readin, writin and rithmetic and hit the streets. Some head for Main Street and the pocket parks and generally spruce up the looks of the thoroughfare. Others head for nursing homes where they may not just paint the residents fingernails, but also the walls, outdoor furniture and anything else which needs tidying up. Some sing or play instruments for the elders. Some Middle School students head for the bus garage to wash buses, the Office of the Aging to wash vans, or work with the New York State Department of Transportation.
