2008-11-21 Vet worried about child safety after dogs poisoned - News, Frontpage - Corkman. ie

A MITCHELSTOWNbased vet has raised fears for the safety of children in Marshalstown after it emerged that a number of dogs have been deliberately poisoned in the area over the past 18months.

The affect that the poison has on dogs is truly appalling. Initially they experience respiratory difficulties followed by severe tremors and fits. If the dog is not treated quickly death is almost inevitable, particularly in the case of younger animals," she said.

Sandra Spratt told The Corkman that she fears a young child could easily fall victim to the callous poisoner, who has been directly responsible for the deaths of more than 12-dogs since early 2007.

2008-11-13 Opinions - Dogs should be kept on their leashes

The emergency room vet assured us that we are just unlucky to come across multiple irresponsible dog owners who allow their dogs to be off-leash.

The last occurred Saturday and resulted in four puncture wounds, one very close to her eye, and more than usd. 300 in veterinarian bills.

Since moving to the Joseph Wolfond neighbourhood two years ago, our dog has experienced four unprovoked attacks by three different dogs.

2008-11-10 EDP24 - Group finds homes for retired greyhounds

BGRB rules state greyhounds should only be put down by a licensed vet. But last week, it emerged dogs from tracks across east Anglia were being disposed of at a knackers yard.

Theyre sprinters so two 20 minute walks a day is sufficient, he said. When we get them we have them spayed, vaccinated, wormed and get their teeth and feet checked, so when people get a dog it comes fully MOTd by Crossings Vets, in Downham Market.

2008-11-10 Canine compassion The Press Democrat Santa Rosa, CA

Yount, who is the program director, last week watched as PTSD patients at the tree-shaded Menlo Park VA facility put three young golden retrievers, all brothers from the same litter, through their paces. As the brown-eyed dogs learn skills like tugging doors open with a rope, turning light switches on and off, and picking up items off the floor, the combat veterans rediscover their emotions.

Service dogs, just like the shellshocked veterans, need to become comfortable in noisy, crowded situations. Assistance Dog Institute runs a breeding program for Labrador and golden retrievers, both genial species, but trains only the best-suited dogs, those inclined to stick to their duty and not run off after squirrels.

2008-11-10 Could my dog be depressed Culpeper Star-Exponent

A: Most commonly, intestinal obstructions cause frequent vomiting, regurgitation, and abdominal discomfort. Sometimes a decreased or absent stool production may be present. I have seen pieces of fabric stay in the stomach for days or weeks without causing problems, only to cause trouble later on. If your dog is not showing illness, you do not need to rush him right to the vet. However, any gastrointestinal symptoms in the next couple of weeks warrant an appointment. To help the fabric pass, large meals with plenty of fiber may be helpful. Canned pumpkin and some high-fiber bread or cereal can work. Good luck.

2008-11-07 Explore Howard: My Pet World

A: "I assume you may be administering fluids to treat kidney failure," says Houston-based veterinary behaviorist Dr. Lore Haug. "I mostly worry that the disease has somehow worsened. Cats are subtle about showing signs of illness, and any change in their interaction with us may be a sign. Please see your veterinarian. Whats going on may be clear to your veterinarian, or maybe its something less obvious, perhaps high blood pressure affecting your cats vision, for example. If everything physiological is ruled out, or not, it cant hurt to offer your cat a treat (something your veterinarian approves) right as you give the cat fluids. Perhaps hell associate the treat with getting the fluids. "

2008-11-06 Dogs put down after attacking sheep - Daventry Today - Back to Home Page

There is no suggestion that the dogs were a danger to people in any way but the attack on the sheep was severe and the owner accepted that the dogs should be put down. "

The dogs owner was very concerned by what had happened and the animals were taken to a vet where they were put down.

TWO dogs were put down yesterday (November 3) in Weedon after attacking a sheep in the afternoon.

Police were called at about 3pm by someone who saw two dogs attacking the sheep in a field near the A5.

2008-11-01 Owner fined usd. 1000 for leaving dog in hot car - Local News - News - General - Northern Daily Leader

South Tamworth Animal Hospital vet nurse Rebecca Miller said despite it being illegal, it was ridiculous that people left their dogs to suffer this way.

Ms Miller said it was also traumatic for vets and vet nurses to treat dogs who were severely dehydrated and suffering heat stress.

Other issues to be aware of during hot weather were making sure animals always had access to fresh drinking water, not exercising dogs during hot weather and not walking dogs on hot pavements as it could burn the sensitive pads on their feet.

THE owner of a dog locked in a car for more than an hour on Marius St yesterday was issued with an infringement notice and a usd. 1000 fine.
