Fresnos Central California Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has occasionally sent strays to Canada. But a formal agreement with a Canadian shelter to routinely ship stray dogs to new homes north of the border is a Valley first, said Beth Caffrey, the Central California SPCA volunteer coordinator. The local SPCA is talking with other Valley and Canadian shelters about expanding the arrangement, she said.

Some shelters across the country, especially along the U. S. -Canadian border, have shipped dogs north to collaborating shelters in Canada, said Kim Intino, director of animal sheltering issues with the Humane Society of the United States. Programs like Fresnos are "becoming more and more common," Intino said.

The Ice Dogs currently have a roster of fifteen players and two goalies. The group is made up of players from around the country and instead of receiving a scholarship each player pays his way onto the team.

In an effort to raise money for the team as well as garner some support from the home crowd, the Ice Dogs will play their only two home games of the season this weekend in Tupelo at the Bancorp South Arena.

Unfortunately, even as careful as I am, I run into this situation repeatedly. Pine Tree Park is just one example. And as much as I love dogs, I really dont want strangers dogs mingling with my dogs or my clients dogs when Im not inviting them to do so. I dont know them or how they are cared for. Its one thing to be in an off-leash dog area and expect dogs to interact. It is another to put dogs in a dangerous position or to frighten people who dont own dogs because your pet is loose and approaching them. Many people are afraid of dogs, including small, fluffy, and toothless pets that couldnt hurt a fly.
