Have traditionally been my choices of distro to accomplish that, but if Remix shapes up the way I hope, it will be great to have that many more choices. (Incidentally, Puppy Linux version 4. 0 just dropped as of May; a closer look at that is definitely in the cards here. ) Chalk up another edition of whats shaping up to be the Linux edition for the rest of us. A new version of Ubuntu, "Netbook Remix", sports a feature set and a slimmed-down footprint specifically for the emerging (shilling for already emerged. ) micro-notebook market. www.informationweek.com

I recently bought an Asus eeePC. Great little machine that fits my needs. Its just a pity that they put Xandros on it rather than a "real" Linux distro. Fortunately, with some effort you can install either Pupeee (Puppy Linux for eeePC) or eeeXubuntu. On its laptops and netbooks. The company is already heavily promoting Linux for its low cost ultra-portable netbook range out later this year, but senior staff have said that Acer will also push Linux on its laptops. TinyME is brand new, as far as a Version 1. 0 implementation, but the project has been going on for a couple of years now as a community supported effort to provide lighter versions of the well regarded PCLinuxOS software. This one uses OpenBox instead of KDE. Like other PCLinuxOS systems, it really benefits from the good hardware detection algorithms from Mandriva and the solid packaging from "TexStar", expert RPM packager and founder of PCLinuxOS. linux.slashdot.org
Review/Overview of Lightweight Linux Distros -- article related to Linux and Technology.
First of all it has to be clear that theres a difference between lightweight and lightweight. Especially Damn Small Linux is very lightweight, but also its not really usable on more recent systems. It think DSL is perfect for 486 or Pentium 1-based systems but nothing more. At the other side there are Zenwalk and Xubuntu which are pretty heavy lightweight distributions. I think the use of Xfce has something to do with that. All the others are floating between those two extremes. " www.newmobilecomputing.com

The debut of the Asus EeePC 900 series renders any overclocking tweaks superfluous as it comes with the Celeron processor running at the full 900MHZ (so the battery tweaks should still apply). If you can wait until June the EeePC will come with the much anticipated 1. 6GHZ Intel Atom processor. GNU/Linux is not Windows though. The monolithic nature of Redmonds product means little option to radically downsize the distro to offset an underpowered processor. The Unix community is spoiled for choice with minimal distros like Damn Small Linux (DSL), Puppy Linux and TinyMe (PClinuxOS variant) which run lightening fast even on relatively slow processors and low memory in both live and installed modes. ) www.freesoftwaremagazine.com
How To Run Linux From A USB Flash Drive Most of the time, Linux is run from either an installation on a hard drive or a live CD/DVD distribution. The first is fast, but not very portable; the second can be run anywhere you have a computer and a CD drive with boot access, but typically isnt very fast. Over the last few years, though, weve seen the emergence of something that combines the speed of a hard drive install with the convenience of a live CD: running Linux from a USB flash drive. www.informationweek.com

Most Linux distributions, such as Ubuntu, are capable of installing directly to a USB drive as if it were just another hard drive, but some distributions treat USB flash drives as a slightly special case. DSL, for instance, has an installer specifically for creating a USB-drive installation of the OS. Puppy can also install itself directly to a flash drive through the built-in Universal Installer utility. However, the default options did not work in my case; I had to explicitly use the "SysLinux" option in its installer menu to make the flash drive bootable. www.tmcnet.com

I was cleaning up my /home partiton when I noticed I had several tiny distros hanging around waiting to be tested. So I thought this might be a good time to write an updated Mini-distro Roundup. Unlike last time, the five contestants are all less than 88 MB in download size. The five contestants are CDlinux , Damn Small Linux 4. 3r2, Puppy 4. 0rc, Slitaz 1. 0, and Austrumi . All of these are the latest stable except Damn Small and Puppy, that are release candidates. So, well cut them just a bit of slack in the stability department if need be. lxer.com
