Carolyn A. Ohlhauser, 60, a registered AKC breeder, ran a kennel at her Cherry Grove home. She was arraigned Wednesday on four counts of second-degree animal abuse, six counts of first-degree animal neglect, 38 counts of second-degree animal neglect, one count of second-degree criminal mistreatment and one count of tampering with evidence.

Authorities said they found more than 100 Chihuahuas in small crates and open pens set up all over the rat-infested house. The dogs were living in their own excrement and urine, and the entire lower level of the house was caked with feces, deputies said. Several large-breed dogs, two horses and four exotics birds also were found at the location.

2008-05-27 Daily Herald Adopt dogs at shelters

Another reason for the overpopulation is puppy mills. Puppy mills are breeding facilities that constantly breed dogs (mainly purebred) for sale and profit. They produce animal cruelty by lack of food, shelter, veterinary care and human socialization.

You have probably heard of puppy mills before, but you might be surprised to learn the majority of puppies being sold today originate from these mills. According to research done by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the majority of puppies in pet stores come from these facilities. You have to be very careful when deciding on where you get your puppy. Adopting an animal from shelters is the best way you can help fight this issue. Not only are you saving a dogs life, but you are also hurting the demand for the mill puppies. Adopting a dog will also save you hundreds of dollars.

2008-05-25 News:Soar to new heights with Neptune

What makes a dog well-behaved One of the most important factors, other than basic obedience training, is exercise. A dog who receives the proper amount of exercise will be less likely to burn off that energy by barking or chewing. The amount of daily exercise that a dog needs varies based on the breed and the age of the dog. For some dogs, physical exercise alone is not enough and they need mental challenges to keep them happy. These are generally working breeds that need a job to do in order to be content.

2008-05-17 Intent behind bite important The Coloradoan,

It doesnt matter that skin isnt broken. What matters is the intent. When the intent is to control, intimidate and exert dominance, it is something that should be addressed as the very serious problem it is. The exception to this rule is that many retrieving breeds have an ulterior motive for grabbing your arm, which is to have the sensation of carrying something in their mouth. However, this was not a retriever. This was a breed that will reach a weight exceeding 100 pounds and that can inflict serious harm if their dominant behaviors are not curtailed.

2008-05-14 Bills to improve conditions in puppy mills to be introduced today -- -

The path to the proposed legislation has been long and bumpy. Rendell dismissed the advisory board two years ago, saying it had not been proactive. He appointed a new board, composed of representatives of dog breeders, breed clubs, farmers, sportsmen, retailers, veterinarians and kennel owners in late 2006.

Even that effort has attracted controversy. In January, some advisory board members criticized the administrations plans, saying they could have unintended consequences for legitimate breeders, clubs and kennels. Nina Schaefer, president of the Pennsylvania Federation of Dog Clubs, wanted to see the proposed legislation before rendering a verdict.
