2008-06-13 Weather leads to boom in blood-sucking pests in community Coastal Point

Brandt said dogs, as well as humans, can get Lyme disease and can suffer other problems from ticks as well. She said pet owners who remove ticks from their pets should then put the ticks in alcohol or flush them down the toilet, and should wash their hands after handling ticks. But she cautioned them not to crush the pets or step on them, as that may allow for more disease transmission.

According to the Delaware Division of Public Health, in 2007, Delaware had 233 more cases of Lyme disease than in 2006 a confirmed 711 human cases. Symptoms can include a bulls-eye rash that is seen in approximately half the time, as well as fever, fatigue, headache, muscle and joint aches. Also, late manifestations, including chronic joint, heart and neurological problems, may occur.

2008-06-12 Fixit: Ticks life cycle shows why they appear in spring, not summer

Black-legged ticks (formerly called deer ticks), however, are a problem from spring through fall, and they are the ones that spread Lyme and other diseases. They have a life cycle similar to the wood ticks, taking two years to finish their development. Both adults and nymphal black-legged ticks will take a blood meal from people.

The life cycle of the wood tick (also called American dog tick) helps explain why you see them in the spring, but not in the summer. These ticks have a two-year life cycle. Eggs are laid in early summer and hatch into larvae. They dont feed until they turn into nymphs the following spring. These immature stages are rarely noticed. After feeding a second time, the nymphs develop into adults during late summer of the second year. The adults do not feed until the following spring, when the weather turns warm, usually in April. They die after laying eggs, typically in June, thus completing the life cycle. In Minnesota, they do not transmit disease.

2008-06-07 More ticks might not mean more Lyme disease cases The Burlington Free Press

The number of reported Lyme disease cases from tick bites in Vermont has nearly tripled in the past two years, jumping from 29 cases in 2005 to 83 cases in 2007. But this might not mean an increased risk of becoming infected with Lyme disease.

Health officials say the increase is likely due to heightened awareness among Vermonters and the number of infected ticks. Lyme disease is only transmitted by the bite of black-legged ticks known as deer ticks. So far, most cases involve the bite dog ticks.
