2008-06-01 The Pioneer Columnists

About two years ago, NDMCs dog squad swooped down, mercilessly hounding all street dogs into their ramshackle van, yanking the cowering creatures out of their resting spots savagely with huge metal tongs. The matriarch and her family yelped and shrieked, trying to escape the vicious dog catchers, but to no avail. Even our Labrador pets and the five adopted street dogs we shelter in our backyard screamed out in sympathy, but everybody was helpless. My wife contacted various agencies and also the kindly British woman expatriate who fed the group each morning. Four days and considerable string-pulling later, they were located in a dog pound, wounded, hungry and petrified. Apparently, the van had let them loose in a thickly populated West Delhi colony but when local residents complained they were rounded up again, taken to a pound,

Connecting all the pieces

The family-run Cooke fish hatchery has more than 100 pens, 11 freshwater hatcheries and three processing plants in Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Maine. And the precise temperature of the water in every pen is important - if the water gets too cold, salmon die. Cookes 1,300 employees must know immediately, because day-after temperature readings just arent fast enough.

The communications climate has changed everywhere, says Tony Rybczynski, head of global enterprise strategic marketing at Nortel. A lot of that has to do with the new breed of employee making their way into the workplace. These days, for example, "a student starting work doesnt expect to sit down at a desk with a black phone on it. They live in a hyperlinked world. Theyre very connected. "

2008-05-27 Ask a Vet Wausau Daily Herald

Does your husband know what breed standard is for a lab; have you had her hips and elbows certified for dysplasia; have her eyes been checked by a veterinary ophthalmologist for PRA (progressive retinal atrophy) These are all hereditary traits of Labrador retrievers that can be passed down to offspring.

Do you have the financial resources to deal with a caesarian if needed Do you have the freedom to stay home from work when the time gets close, or if the pups need to be bottle fed every two to four hours Do not breed your female unless you have answered yes to all the above questions.
