2008-09-13 Last orders: Is the pub facing extinction-Features, Food and Drink-The Independent
Still, Im aware of the statistics: 36 pubs close every week. The reasons are not hard to find. First came the smoking ban. As a non-smoker, Im delighted to walk into a pub and not be assailed by the noxious odour of stale cigarette smoke. But the Government handled the change insensitively. As the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) and other organisations argued, pubs with more than one bar should have been allowed to set aside an indoor area for smokers, with a later date set for a complete ban on smoking in pubs. The total lockout of smokers has driven them to the supermarkets, with a drastic decline in the number of people visiting pubs.
The British pub is alive and well. Thats a claim that should cause the men in white coats to cart me off for a period of quiet contemplation in a padded cell. Its common knowledge that the pub is finished and heading for the great saloon bar in the sky.
2008-09-13 A most serious and extraordinary problem: Ruth Rendell on Arthur Conan Doyle Books The Guardian
Himself a doctor, Conan Doyle was working as a general practitioner in Plymouth at the time, so he was in a position easily to explore the area. Making preparations for the novella based on his friends ghost story, he went with Fletcher Robinson on a trip to the moor. They stayed at the Duchy Hotel at Princetown and made forays into the surrounding countryside where the author saw bronze age settlements, Fox Tor, the grim prison itself and, of course, those bogs in which it was said any human being or animal straying into them would be fatally sucked down into their murky depths. He soon had material for his story, taking its title from the name of a Baskerville who had married into a local family or, perhaps, from Harry Baskerville, the coachman who had driven Conan Doyle and Robinsons pony and trap about Dartmoor. Whichever it

2008-09-13 Daily Star: Simply The Best 7 Days A Week :: Football :: King Kev is back. Keegans big Toonaround
Football history. For just days after he tendered his resignation, Keegan became embroiled in a bitter war of words with the Toon hierachy. And a messy court battle appeared inevitable with Newcastle poised to seek 2m compensation for breach of contract while Keegan, with the backing of the LMA, was claiming a similar sum for constructive dismissal.
Llambias has pulled the plug on his column in todays match programme. Former chairmen Freddy Shepherd and Chris Mort both wrote regularly but their successor has decided to keep fans in the dark about events which have rocked the club to its foundations.

Instead of getting barked commands from a granite-jawed sergeantmajor type, we and rsquo;re politely exhorted to work on our abdominals, posture and aerobic stamina through exercise classes and heartbreakingly scenic hikes. Our closest brush with military discipline involves food: random grazing is out, regular gourmet meals are in. Oh, all right, if we have to.
It and rsquo;s a banquet fit for a king - or, rather, a petit Monsieur le Pr and eacute;sident and his slinky supermodel wife. I and rsquo;ve polished off the foie gras, devoured a fillet of pork and tucked into an elegy-inducing organic salmon wonton.
2008-09-07 Pop: Glasvegas, Fat Sams, Dundee Music The Observer
The fans think so too. They go crazy to the bands recent single, Geraldine, a song full of hopeful lyrics about being someones shepherd and angel, which has a neat twist - these words come from a social worker. They revel in this detail, singing: Im your social worker. with the same passion as I heard teenagers sing: You and I are gonna live forever in 1994. But unlike Oasis and other stadium-saturating bands, Glasvegas have a very human relationship with their audience. Rather than strutting around arrogantly, they thank their fans, the venue, and their support band, and smile. And while they might arrive on stage all in black like a classic rockabilly quartet, youre not surprised when Allan starts the show wearing shades but dispenses with them quickly.

Scientists in Israel are making digital copies of the Dead Sea Scrolls to place them on the internet. The 2,000-year-old documents, most on parchment, are the oldest copies of the Hebrew Bible and include secular text dating from the 3rd century BC to the 1st century AD. The scrolls were found by a bedouin shepherd looking for a stray sheep in 1947. Infrared imaging will allow readers to see faded sections not visible to the naked eye.
