While growing up, John loved racing horses, while Charles enjoyed hunting. John graduated from MIT in 1879. He lived at his parents home until he bought circa 1920 the property upon which he built Raceland, a 220-acre estate on Salem End Road that housed a half-mile racetrack, a steeplechase course, a golf course, stables and dog kennels. By the this time, Macomber had become president of First Boston Corp. , a New York-based investment bank.

2008-03-24 The Daily Times Salisbury, Md.

Despite these complaints about the Humane Society, many stories have happy endings. One of the agencys recent adoptions is Chopper, a pit bull mix. Dipal Patel, a 23-year-old graduate student studying physical therapy at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, wanted a companion in his apartment during those long hours of studying.

Since the outbreak, new kennels with cinder-block dividers and an isolation ward prevent the spread of disease. A sensitive air filtration system also reduces kennel cough and other canine ailments. These are part of a series of improvements and expansions the Humane Society has made under Lugos leadership.

2008-03-20 NCAA Pants Party: Gonzaga Vs. Davidson

That moment was denied. Subsequent potential moments have been denied. Davidson lost to Michigan in the NCAA tournament in 1998, to Ohio State in 2002 and 2006 and to Maryland last year. The Wildcats have not won an NCAA tournament game since Lefty Driesell left as coach in 1969. (In 1964, Davidson was Sports Illustrateds preseason No. 1 team. ) This week is the moment now for this team, and we long-waiting fans, students and alumni would dread having another such moment denied.

St. Marys and Gonzaga should both get in, and Im not saying that because Im a homer. St. Marys is 25-6, and five of those six losses are to NCAA tournament teams (twice at USD, at Gonzaga, at Texas, and home vs. Kent State in Bracketbusters) and the sixth was to a good Southern Illinois team in Carbondale. They beat Drake, Oregon and Ohio earlier this year, plus they have a win apiece over Gonzaga and San Diego at home. They should be in good shape, unless the Marylands and Arizona States of the world start winning THEIR conference tournaments.
