2008-06-13 Humane Society looks to future Wausau Daily Herald

Former shelter manager Jill Janikowski left her post to work as dog kennel manager at the Humane Society of Marathon County -- a job she said is closer to home and less stressful. The Lincoln County shelter likely will launch a national search for a long-term replacement.

The nonprofit shelter has an annual budget of about usd. 199,000. Its revenue comes from adoptions and dog license fees, government subsidies, fundraising efforts and donations.

A judge ordered Lori Nichiow-Brubaker, 49, to surrender her kennel license. Nichiow-Brubaker also agreed to no longer work in the kennel business.

She was investigated in 2004 after animal control found Lornich Kennels at 15 Mile and Mound roads overcrowded. They said they also found unclean cages, some animals without drinking water and animals shivering.

A kennel owner in Sterling Heights pleaded guilty to three charges of animal cruelty Tuesday after police and volunteers rescued about 60 dogs, seven cats and one horse from her business in April.

It applies only to Oklahoma City and Tulsa and will not affect dog kennels already licensed in the cities. School patrons of Villa Teresa Moore preschool in south Oklahoma City sought the bill because of a kennel operating near the school.

Increases fines and punishments for the crime of copper theft and requires more stringent record-keeping from scrap metal and junk dealers. It also requires scrap metal dealers to keep records of information obtained from sellers, including a photocopy of the sellers drivers license and vehicle tag number. The measure also clarifies penalties regarding failure to keep records required by law.
