2008-08-22 Steve Connor: All bark and no bite in todays modified dog-Commentators, Opinion-The Independent
One of the results has led to dogs having smaller brains than wolves. A wolf-sized dog has a brain about 10 per cent smaller than a wolf. This doesnt mean that dogs are not as smart as wolves, only that their intelligence is geared towards interacting with humans, rather than survival in the wild. Wolves, for instance, dont bark. Barking appears to have evolved as a way for dogs to communicate with their masters. Indeed, studies show that humans, even those who dont have dogs, can recognise the emotional "meaning" attached to a bark, whether the dog is for example playful, frightened or aggressive.
The Kennel Club has come in for a bit of a whipping this week over its inability to control the inbreeding of dogs which has resulted in some extreme examples of canine suffering, such as spaniels with skulls too small for their brains.

2008-08-21 Pennsylvania Governor Calls for Dog Law Reforms
Pennsylvanias current dog law does not ban kennel owners from euthanizing their dogs with firearms, whether they are healthy or not. In his appeal at a news conference Saturday at Schuylkill River Dog Park, Rendell called the killings totally unnecessary and said the time has come to enact legislation that would make this practice illegal as well as raise the standards under which the states commercial breeding kennel industry operates.
Under House Bill 2525, currently pending in the House, only veterinarians would be allowed to euthanize dogs in commercial breeding kennels. The bill also requires outdoor exercise, solid flooring, and prohibits the stacking of cages.
