The combination of drinking and GU games quickly escalates into dangerous cocktails of crude profanities and insulting prejudice at games and afterward. Over the past few weeks, faithful Bulletin readers have no doubt witnessed a flurry of press regarding the events surrounding this years Kennel Club board. As a devoted Gonzaga basketball fan and current Kennel board member, I would like to resolve some issues raised by our students and faculty. The current policy of the Kennel board does not encourage or condone underage drinking. In October, Gov. Edward G. Rendell proposed changes to the states dog law, and to regulations that are designed to improve the conditions under which dogs are bred and sold. Among the components of the legislation are provisions to strengthen criminal penalties related to the dog law and cruelty statutes, allow dog wardens to seize distressed dogs, and require kennel owners to post a surety bond before getting licensed. Additionally, Rebecca McDonald of the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals alleged that the animals were deprived of food, water, veterinary care and adequate shelter sufficient to keep them warm. The city of Paola has licensed and registered 113 dogs and 16 cats this year, but city police officers have responded to far more complaints of strays. The group of about seven officers who are trained to capture dogs and cats have responded to 198 calls for stray dogs and 71 calls for stray cats so far this year, according to police records. Once a loose dog or cat is captured, they are taken to the Wea Creek Kennels at 31760 Hedge Lane southeast of Paola. The owners of animals with identification are called immediately. Rendells efforts to crack down on unsatisfactory kennels, state dog wardens have helped to remove 18 dogs from a Lancaster County kennel as a result of cruelty charges issued by humane officers. Dog wardens were in the process of issuing a license revocation to Ervin Zimmerman, who owns the kennel in Ephrata, on Friday, Nov. 2, when they spotted dogs with matted fur and open sores.
