Some dogs may become kennel crazy, but this is not a regular occurrence. This and other behavior problems occur in all shelters, regardless of how much space the facility has. LCHS staff will try to place the dogs having problems with shelter life in a foster home to give him/her an opportunity to recover. Whenever possible, the dogs are housed outside to give them a change.

Shelter staff and volunteers work with all the animals, cats and dogs, to improve their interaction with humans and other animals. Dogs may be housed with other dogs for company. Two or more dogs will be taken to the outside playpens in order for them to run and play together. Animals are routinely taken to various functions such as the Parade of Lights, volunteer fairs at Carroll College, visits to assisted living homes and special events at stores.

Sgt. Jaimi Diaz, the Al Qaim kennel master, Task Force Military Police, is currently working with 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 2, as a dog handler. She runs dismounted patrols with the unit to look for improvised explosive devices while balancing her duties in the kennel.

Diaz, who is on her first deployment, volunteered to leave her unit in Okinawa, Japan, to fill a yearlong individual augment billet. She began her assignment at Camp Fallujah where she served for five months as the senior dog handler. She was then sent to Al Qaim, on the Syrian border, to take over the role of kennel master and said she is learning a great deal.

At the moment the dogs live in wire-fronted kennels, which werent designed with visitors in mind. They were built just to get them off the street and give them food, warmth and shelter. "

The work will take place in two phases, to allow current canine residents to stay in their kennels. Most of the dogs have been re-settled in other kennels, but about 35 will stay in Stokenchurch. Phase one is set to finish in February when there will be a grand opening of the new facility.
