Simply put, the dogs may be able to predict a seizure before it happens. No one knows how the dogs develop this intuition. Various theories point to something that the dogs may smell, or a change in the electrical field. But as Arnold puts it, "The dogs go berserk. You can tell something is very distressing to the dog. " Its a controversial claim. Some seizure experts scoff at the idea that dogs have this sense, whatever explains it. Arnold says no one can train a dog to have this sense. But she insists 88 percent of her dogs develop this sense within the first year of placement. www.cbsnews.com

The higher number of dogs in the shelter - currently, there are 47 kennels housing more than 80 dogs with some kennels containing three or four medium-sized dogs - means kennel cough, which is highly contagious, is more likely to be passed on to other dogs. The current shelter does not have a separate isolation area for sick dogs; all kennels are in the same room. The intent of any animal shelter should be to move animals as quickly as possible through their doors . It is not natural for dogs to live their lives in kennels," Machowski said, adding that the length of time depends on the socialization and exercise a dog is receiving. All dogs should be monitored daily for deterioration by an animal behavior expert, she said, to ensure those that may be deteriorating are euthanized because otherwise it becomes inhumane to continue to hold them. www.centralohio.com

Meta name= Today, PETA sent an urgent plea to LaRue County Attorney Dale Morris urging his office to vigorously prosecute Sandra and William S. Coy of Hodgenville. The Coys face charges stemming from authorities discovery of numerous reportedly neglected dogs on their property as well as the remains of two others--including the bloated corpse of a pit bull who was found inside a kennel and still chained. Reports indicate that 10 surviving dogs had no access to water until the authorities arrived on the scene and that temperatures had exceeded 100F that day. Forty-six dogs were reportedly removed from the premises. www.peta.org

That is a totally atypical for a dog show, but the Worstminster Dog Show is not your typical dog show, admitted Jane Bachrach, spokeswoman for the reclusive Bonedale Kennel Club. Its an elite group of dog aficionados, Bachrach said, but fearing an onslaught of international publicity, these canine cognoscenti are shunning the spotlight, she said. Instead, the spotlight belongs to the dogs on Sunday, as they compete in six classes: one for young handlers, one for young pups, one for old pups. Dogs small enough to be held in one hand get their own class. Mutts get their own class. (Thats the one-of-a-kind class. ) And yes, purebreds get a class, too. But just one. www.aspendailynews.com

HOWLAND 2 After weeks of controversy at the Trumbull County Dog Kennel, chief Dog Warden Bob Campana says improvements to the kennel and to its procedures have the facility moving in a positive direction. Conflicts between volunteers and the kennel workers have made headlines in recent weeks as "dog rescuer" Sandra Paris of Portage County told commissioners that 93 percent of the dogs that enter the county facility are euthanized a number that is more than double the state average. www.vindy.com
Im sure she knew all of the physical dangers about letting her French Bulldogs sleep outside. She is obviously cares a great deal about thse dogs and must have knowledge about the breed to become a breeder and sell her dogs for so much. Im also sure that none of you have seen how and where she keeps her bulldogs and so should not judge her by the little bit the paper has written. My heart goes out to her. I cant imagine the stress of seeing your furry family dead like that. If it was foulplay, I hope they catch whomever did it and punish him/her/them to the fullest extent of the law. www.theday.com

The expo was created as a way to allow gun dogs and their owners an opportunity to tune up their skills prior to the upcoming waterfowl and upland game seasons. It is likely the only interactive event in Wisconsin and certainly one of very few in the Midwest for the average dog and handler to experience tests and games that simulate hunting scenarios or test handling skills. This years event featured seven different sporting dog games for handlers and their dogs to tune their skills and have a good time. Games can be run for fun or for the handlers with bragging rights on their mind for points that lead to the Events championship. www.sheboygan-press.com
