Every dog that races in the Iditarod is checked by veterinarians during extensive pre-race screenings and throughout the race. Knowing their dogs as they do, they even know the attitudes of each of their dogs. Dogs do get injured in these races, but so do people doing sports they love. Dogs unable to run, or even no longer eager to run, are "dropped" at any checkpoint. There is a "Cripple" checkpoint in the northern route of the Iditarod race, the route that is run during even years. This checkpoint takes it name from the old gold mining district of Cripple; it has absolutely nothing to do with "crippled" dogs. Last year, commissioners approved a permit to allow Gary McDuffee to have as many as 600 breeding dogs at his kennel in Belle Prairie Township. They reduced the number at a meeting Tuesday after requiring McDuffee to set aside one-sixth of his indoor kennel space for the dogs to exercise. The county has a moratorium on new breeding facilities and is rewriting ordinances that govern how many dogs a breeder can have at one kennel. Commissioners hope to have new ordinances in place by July, county administrator Tim Houle said. wcco.com

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. - On , the Chesapeake Kennel Club presented an unsolicited donation, in the form of a check for usd. 3,000, to the Calvert County Sheriffs Office Canine Unit during a dog show at the Calvert County Fairgrounds. The smell of urine and feces was overpowering, and the conditions were so cramped that dogs could barely move. Outside, they were penned in kennels and covered in feces. Theyve never had human contact, so theyre scared of people. Theyre scared of grass.
