Tests on Spencers other three dogs revealed that two of them also had high liver enzyme levels, so Oehmke called specialists at Kansas State Universitys College of Veterinary Medicine in Manhattan for advice.
When dogs or other living things -- cattle, horses or people -- drink the water, Oehme said, the algae get in their stomach. As the stomach digests the algae, the toxin is released, which causes the normal digestive process to break down.
