Weve got a BIG problem-dogs that cant resist digging holes. It might be a "dog thing," but its doing a LOT of harm to our nests. The digging is all up and down the island, but particularly bad in Surf City and North Topsail. Weve had over a dozen nests dug up by dogs, three in the past week. In fact, weve been hit by a double whammy of foxes and dogs this year, with dog destruction far outweighing fox predation. Thats pretty sad, considering that the odds are so highly stacked against these hatchlings ever seeing their first birthday without having the additional threat of being dug up and eaten alive during incubation. All three towns have ordinances on their books concerning dogs on the beach.
