Russ Morman, 44, returns to Portland for his fourth season as the Sea Dogs Hitting Coach and fifth season in the Red Sox organization. Morman spent the 2003 season as the Red Sox Single-A Augusta Manager before joining the Sea Dogs in 2004. Prior to joining the Red Sox organization, Morman worked in the Florida Marlins organization where he spent two seasons as the manager of the Single-A Kane County Cougars. In 2001 he led Kane County to the Midwest League Championship and was named Midwest League Manager of the Year. Morman played 12 years of professional baseball, and was an International League All-Star. He played parts of nine seasons in the Major Leagues with the White Sox, Royals, and Marlins. Morman was inducted into the Kansas City Sports Commission Hall of Fame in 2005.

At the last commission meeting on Thursday, May 3, commissioner Dianne Knowlton made a motion to go forward with the K-9 fund drive, but with certain stipulations. One of the stipulations stated that the funds must be in place before a dog is purchased. Because no one had anticipated the donation of a dog, this stipulation had to be reconsidered and amended. In addition, another stipulation stated that if the fund goal was not obtainable, the funds donated will be used to provide services towards drug abuse education and enforcement. With the purchase of a dog, any funds now received will now need to be applied towards the K-9 project.
