I have a special dog (well, all dogs are special) named Willie, and he is from Chile. I have friends in Chile, and on my last visit there in summer of 2007 I brought a puppy back home with me. My friends dog Matilda was unexpectedly pregnant and had four puppies; Willie was one of these puppies. Although Willie came from a loving home, many less fortunate dogs run free in packs in Chile and in South America in general. There are very few spaying and neutering practices as evident by the many strays. I have thought about Willie living in Chile, most likely an unaltered male, and wondered whether he would have escaped and ended up running in a pack. It is tough for people like me who know that just by spaying and neutering, there would be far fewer stray dogs. www.sanluisobispo.com

Animal shelter volunteer Wayne Romano said that many puppies are being abandoned this spring. He reported that, on Wednesday morning, another call came in concerning a dog and her puppies that were abandoned on Townline near Steel Road. He also warned local residents that Parvo is running rampant in the county, and everyone should make sure their dogs have shots. Less than an hour after he found them, while Bill and Candy were playing with the puppies in their yard, a passerby stopped and asked about the young dogs. Soon after that, he returned and the first puppy had found its new home. In the days that followed, the concerned man even called back to report to the Sewards how well the pup was doing. www.sooeveningnews.com

Socialising dogs early is found to be the best way to integrate puppies into families, and to help them accept new people like their vet, said course co-ordinator Kate Kirkovski. We encourage the whole family to get involved in basic training of puppies and teach owners how to instruct their dogs to sit, drop, stand, stay, and a few tricks. The main aim of puppy school is to socialise puppies with other dogs, people and children. We do this through puppy play time. www.starnewsgroup.com.au

The dogs are all German Shepherds and they range from puppies to adult dogs. It is fortunate that we were able to remove these dogs before the situation deteriorated further. It is regrettable that this may mar the reputation of others who are devoted to animal welfare and strive to provide the highest standard of care to the animals they rescue," said Richard Gerbasi, Humane Society Vice President of Operations and Field Services. rochesterhomepage.net
