The awful tragedies of kids being killed or maimed by family pets are awful, but I see no practical, legally viable way of preventing most of these except by measures that unacceptably restrict our liberties. Yes, there are irresponsible dog owners out there, however, the majority of people, like most things, do the right thing. Parents also create fear in their children in regards to dogs. Growing up, we had an Australian Terrier who was old and frail, yet the 10 year old across the road was frightened of her - why, because her mother was terrified of dogs. One also has to question the push by the State Labor governament for more and more high and medium density housing, resulting in more and more people living in apartments and not being exposed to animals. I dont know if you can say a breed is all good or all bad, but there are definitely some pits that are dangerous and others that are gentle. Im not a dog person but I lived in a home with a pit for a few years and that was the first dog I fell in love with. She was so gentle she was scared of my cats. She came from a litter where the siblings were being bred to fight; they turned out to be extremely aggressive and unsafe dogs. This particular dog was playful, intelligent, protective, and lots of other good things. Ill take my chances with a pit bull rather than a man with a gun any day. I really do hope justice prevails, but I wont believe it till this case goes to court and they are hauled off in shackles to serve their time. These are the kind of stories that I just can not understand. I have a two kids, we go on walks in our neighborhood, even if I was with them, I would have a hard time defending all three of us. I would do whatever it took but to save my kids, but these are strong animals. It is an owners responsiblity to keep their dogs in a fence, if they dig out, it is still your responsibility.
