2008-02-22 Bellowing beagle shines at Westminster

Chances are probably not very good, despite the huge popularity that some of these crossbred dogs have recently enjoyed. From the labradoodle to the mork (a maltese/Yorkshire terrier cross) and all the others, we have to remember that in their first generation, these dogs are nothing more than, well, mutts. And while Im not quite sure how the American Kennel Club goes about deciding when to certify a new breed, I do know that it takes many, many generations for a new breed of dog to develop. So even though some dogs have a common background, (some breeds have actually developed as an outbreeding of another), it isnt an overnight process. And who knows what you might get if you bred one labradoodle to another. After 10 or 15 generations, what would these dogs resemble most A Lab or a poodle Maybe in a few decades well find out.

2008-06-25 Ever Wondered Why Pointers Point and Sheepdogs Herd

An international team of researchers, which included scientists at the National Human Genome Research Institute, the University of Utah, Sundowners Kennels in Gilroy, California and Mars Waltham Center for Pet Nutrition in the United Kingdom, studied simple genetic markers known as Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms, or SNPs, to find places in the dog genome that correlate with breed traits. Because many traits are stereotyped and no. 8212; or fixed within breeds researchers can zero in on these hot spots to see what specific genes are in the area that might contribute to differences in traits.

2008-04-30 Kennel offers doggie aquatic therapy :: Naperville Sun :: Lifestyles

This month, Kountry Kennels became the first business in Naperville to open a pool just for pooches. It sounds like its exclusively for the pampered, but veterinarians recommend aquatic exercise for dogs who are injured, overweight or arthritic. Swimming for five minutes gives dogs an aerobic workout equal to walking five miles, according to the Association of Canine Water Therapy. Guinness owner, Denise Lavelle of Aurora, watched the session from a poolside bench. She explained he was injured by her 7-year-old chocolate Labrador, Dude. Part of Guinness spine broke off, then he herniated a disc and was paralyzed. Lavelle had to carry him around for a month. Now he uses a ramp to get in and out of the family SUV.

2008-03-21 And bull; Recreational mushers driven by fun, not competition

The 14 dogs he now owns have come from a variety of sources. He got his two youngest from the National Park Service at Denali National Park and Preserve as puppies through an adoption program. Three of his dogs came from a mushing friend who died from cancer a few years back and had to get rid of his kennel. His oldest dog, 13-year-old MoMo, he got from Linwood Fiedler, a well-known Iditarod musher whom Richter used to drive dogs for. Another dog, a blue-eyed husky named Mardil, he found at a dumpster.

2008-06-30 A wordless hero evokes echoes of the Bard - The Boston Globe

There are many reasons one might be drawn to David Wroblewskis ambitious first novel, "The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. " First of all, one has to have a heart of stone to dismiss a tale of a boy and his dog - or, in this case, a boy and his pack of dogs. Second, it is hard not to applaud the hubris of a writer resetting "Hamlet" in Wisconsin in the 1970s (complete with madness and ghosts) and making the prince (young Edgar) mute from birth. Then there are the lengthy ruminations, mysterious letters, and secret notes about breeding and perfecting a special line of dogs, a subplot that suggests a thriller is in the offing and reminded me briefly of "Frankenstein" and Kirsten Bakiss science fiction fable, "Lives of the Monster Dogs. " (I am a fan of both books. )

2008-02-29 Scoop: Kennel cough spreading in South Island

The kennel cough vaccines do protect dogs, but the immunity may be short-lived and the protection may not be complete," says Dr Verhoek. "While vaccinated dogs can sometimes have a mild infection, we still recommend vaccination, particularly for dogs that are being taken to shows or anywhere they come into contact with other dogs. "

Calling it kennel cough suggests that all dogs that go into kennels will catch it and this is not the case at all. However, it is very contagious so it can spread very rapidly when a large number of dogs are brought together in one place," he says. "A better name for the disease would be canine cough or dog flu. 2008-05-24 Every dog has his day - Pasadena Star-News

The Pasadena Kennel Club hosts its annual dog show on and June 1 at Brookside Park in Pasadena. But this year promises to be even more spectacular, with 1,800 dogs in attendance competing in various events and celebrating the Pasadena Kennel Clubs 100th anniversary.

It never materialized to that point, but weve been around for 100 years now," said Jarratt Brunson, a 25-year member of the kennel club who started out showing Old English sheepdogs. Now he raises Cavalier King Charles spaniels. He currently has two champions living in Utah and three dogs showing in Texas and Idaho.

2008-04-01 Dog tracks may face tougher scrutiny

In November, the state revoked the license of trainer Nelson Ulrich and fined him usd. 11,000 after three dog urine tests turned up positive for a cocaine derivative at the Daytona Beach Kennel Club. Three other dogs in his care were found dead by investigators when they visited him to suspend his license for the drug positives. That case is still under investigation by local law enforcement.

At the Hialeah kennel shared by Miami-Dades Flagler track and Browards Mardi Gras track, recent records show that investigators have looked into one flea complaint and the deaths of two dogs from heat exhaustion after a kennel worker couldnt catch them on the exercise track. Investigators determined the deaths were accidental.

2008-02-22 Mat-Su : Mushing to maturity

Allen Davis started the kennel about 12 years ago when the family lived in Montana. He flirted with the idea of breeding before falling under the mushing spell. A pair of dogs from the kennels of DeeDee Jonrowe and Jeff King helped their bloodlines, although Allen is quick to say hes not a big spender for pedigree. Their kennel is what it is and MacKenzie can make the best of it, he says.

2008-05-24 Pets corner: a problem beagle - Regulars, Saturday Magazine - The Independent

It is so disheartening when our perfect, problem-free dogs suddenly develop something like this, out of the blue. From what you describe, it seems Iikely that this problem stems from your beagles recent spell in kennels. Also, she may have been affected by the flight from Australia to London. Behavioural problems such as weeing indoors often arise when there has been a change in a dogs routine, or after a traumatic experience. When dogs are in kennels, they may not always have access to outside space when they need to go to the toilet, so they do it in their kennel, usually close to their bed. They get into a habit and when they come home, they can exhibit the same behaviour. You need to break this habit. If you know the times she is doing it, take her outside. At night, and when she is not supervised, you might want to think
