Every reputable breeder/rescue group/shelter has a similarcontract. We go through a great deal of effort ensuring the next home is the last. I have spent tens of thousands of dollars readying homeless dogs for adoption. I cant calculate the amount of time and effort that goes into it, as well. That doesn count the screening pocess, the home checks, the reference checks, and the interview process. And to think some thoughtless person would come along and negate it all with her ignorance or "good intentins" is offensive to me. This is a FIRST COME/FIRST SERVE adoption facility. We cannot afford to HOLD animals for someone, and then they not show up, leaving the animal another week at the shelter. If you desire to adopt during the weekdays, call 843-378-0016 to make an appointment. GENERAL adoption hours are Saturday and Sunday from 10am-2pm at the shelter. All animals adopted from the shelter are required by S. C. LAW to be SPAYED or NEUTERED. We offer a FREE SPAY for adult (FEMALE ONLY) dogs and cats adopted from us (through some of our local area vets). Any out of area adoptions, SPAY procedures will be discussed. The shelter has made a lot of changes since I visited many years ago. A good one is a huge fenced area, although I dont know what they do with it. On the downside, one parking lot is staff only. So if very many people want to look for a new pet, they might not find a parking spot. And its no wonder the shelter director talks about having to euthanize lots of dogs. She has reduced the space allotted to dogs by a huge amount. There isnt much space for dogs. A room that used to house dogs has been set aside for cats (no less deserving, but they dont need as much space). The entire cat operation is very visitor-friendly. The dog area is not. Any one who knows animals can tell you you any animal including cats and dogs have a wild streak in them you can just as easily be attacked by a parakeet as you can a dog or ferret . a parrot can bite your finger off . pits have been bred for many years to fight or pull weight. or protect you they do have a bad rep you cant make them let go off what they grab . that doesnt make them more dangerous the owner that makes them fight is the problem. i have a shepherd . while she is trained to protect . she is still freindly . my daughter has a pit that has the same tendencies. they are ANIMALS. you can train a tiger to be freindly up to a point . that doesnt mean you shouldnt keep it controlled . you certainly wouldnt let it run loose in the neighborhood. there are a lot of bad owners who dont have control . that is where the www.knoxnews.com

I think it is Ellen that owes the Rescue an apology. I am a fan of hers and her show, but, in this case she is in the wrong. I do not believe she did not know that the dog would have to be returned to the rescue if she could not keep it. I have adopted dogs from rescues before, and that is the one point they make sure you have a clear understanding of, before you are allowed to sign the contract and leave with the animal. They are just trying very hard to make sure animals they adopt out are not passed from home to home. I think Ellen was under the mistaken impression, they either would not check up on the dog or that they would not or could not enforce the contract.
