2008-11-18 Crunch time for dogs and their owners Dream Dogs

The reason for dogs losing their homes is due to a shortage of money to pay veterinary bills and the insurance premiums for pets that are soaring sky high.

A veterinary bill can average about three hundred pounds a year for a dog and if there is a more complicated condition the cost can run into thousands of pounds.

It is wise to check out the insurance that you are paying monthly to see what the policy actually covers you for. Sometimes the insurance offered will be only for one ailment, and if the dog suffers anything at all that may be connected to the illness already treated the insurers will not pay out.

2008-11-16 City seeking vets input on rabies Local Government

The city formed a committee to study the issue, Johnson said, after a Wichita Eagle story in March expressed concern from some dog owners that yearly rabies vaccinations may be unnecessary and even harmful to pets.

The survey asks whether individual veterinarians should be "legally allowed individual discretion" in determining how often the vaccine is given, and whether the vets think administering the vaccine on a multiyear basis, rather than annually, would harm human health or improve dogs health.

2008-11-16 Boise, Idaho News, Weather, Sports, and More -Dog Summer Bummer Diseases

Dr. Stephen Steep believes yet another factor plays a role in spreading vector-borne diseases among dogs during the summer. We hit the road more at this time, and many of us bring our dogs along for the ride, says Dr. Steep, DVM, an Oxford, Mich. , veterinarian and past president of the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association. Unfortunately bug pests can hitch a ride during such trips. Weve dramatically increased our exposure, he says. If you go to a dog park, a dog there might have visited another part of the country and brought back a parasite.
