There are six breeds of coonhounds: Black and Tan, Bluetick, Plott, Redbone and Treeing Walker. The Plott coonhound is the official state dog of North Carolina and the breed is believed to have originated in the mountains of North Carolina. The Plott family is said to have brought the dog over from Germany and bred them in Waynesville. They originally raised them to hunt bears.
