Every Iditarod race dog is checked by veterinarians pre-race and at more than 20 checkpoints. A dog with a serious injury or its beginnings is not allowed to continue. Mushers usually know, even before a veterinary check, whether a dog has an injury. Knowing their dogs as they do, they even know the attitudes of each of their dogs. Dogs do get injured in these races, but so do people doing sports they love. Dogs unable, or even no longer eager, to run are "dropped" at any checkpoint. There is a "Cripple" checkpoint in the northern (even year) route of the race. This checkpoint gets its name from the old gold mining district of Cripple; it has nothing to do with "crippled" dogs. Dogs "dropped" from the race are cared for by veterinarians and volunteers, and are reunited with their mushers at the races conclusion. www.timesargus.com

The centerpiece of AquaDog, which is based in Waltham, is an 8-by-20-foot warm pool where dogs can swim, lounge, play fetch and move around. With massage jets and the ability to create a current of approximately six miles per hour, the AquaDog pool serves every type of dog, from young ones with high-energy, that need to swim and fetch, to older dogs that benefit from gentle exercise that doesnt hurt their joints. AquaDog also offers doggie massages and Reiki, a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation. There are only about 30 doggie pools like it in the country, and AquaDog is the only one around here. southendnews.com
Im calling about the problem of barking dogs. We live in the southwest quadrant of Gilroy, and there are a lot of cats. When I walk my dog late in the evening, my dog will bark at all the cats, which will set off all the other dogs in the neighborhood, and when I come back the same thing is repeated. There must be a law about letting cats run loose through neighborhoods. If the police would do something about that, wed have a lot less barking. Im not going to stop walking my dog because people are irresponsible with their cats. www.gilroydispatch.com
It was a silent fly-by-night attack on a forward Baluch post. There were two small villages along the route to the enemy post which Gurung did well to skirt. Not a single shot was fired throughout the six-hour dusk-to-dawn operation. Gurungs boys brought back Baluchi memorabilia and physical evidence that the retribution had been smart, severe and swift. At the tail end of the returning patrol was Krupa, a Baluch souvenir between his teeth. The Brigade Commander was most impressed with the surgical operation. All the eight members of the patrol were given an instant gallantry award: Six bottles of run and meat on hoof. Krupa was gifted with a leg of lamb and a crimson collar with a pendent reading: For Valour. www.dailypioneer.com
The brother of Olympic biathlete Rachael Steer, Zack -- a former skier himself -- was thinking he might have been even faster if he hadnt broke a ski pole. Mushers regularly use poles to help the dogs move the sled along the coast. Steers usd. 100 pole was tied to his sled on the run from Takota to Ophir about halfway through the 1,100-mile race from Anchorage to Nome when a tree limb caught it and snapped it in half. www.adn.com
Mushers head out over Devil Track Lake in the first Gunflint Classic Fun Run on Sunday, above. Hundreds turned up for the exciting start at Devil Track Landing as mushers, who had to be in their sleeping bags with their boots off, got into their gear, hitched up their dogs as fast as they could and hit the trail. The finish was at Trail Center where mushers were greeted by an enthusiastic crowd. No doubt about it traditional sled dog races should be held on the Gunflint Trail every year. Certainly that seemed to be the opinion of hundreds of enthusiastic fans Sunday as they watched more than 30 mushers scramble from their sleeping bags, hitch up their dogs and head out across Devil Track Lake in a race to Trail Center on a perfect day for sled dog racing. The short course mushers went to Trail Center. The longer course went to Trail Center, then Gunflint Lake and back to Trail Center. www.grandmarais-mn.com

N Finally, it lets all those dog owners know that if theres ever a complaint filed against you and the complainant is a public safety officer and he comes to your house to resolve the issue, because most public safety officers are trained to resolve issues, just tell them "Im sorry, hes just a little puppy. " Dont try to resolve anything just continue to be an irresponsible dog owner and allow the police to take care of the problem. Even if that means them coming to your house 15 or more times. Then make an allegation that the complainant abused his power, as a public safety officer, and tried poisoning your dog. Write a letter to the safety officers department and demand that he be "reprimanded and suspended if not fired" then let the Dispatch know about it so you can get your family picture on the front page.
