Well---I would never go into someones yard that I know has a huge dog. Even a pit bull. Any dog will carry on when you enter their property or knock on their door. I own a pit bull that is disabled. She even has one eye-- She is completely spoiled from birth because of being mauled at birth. At this time, she has her own blanket, bed, bathed weekly, enjoys riding in the car, and LOVES people that are familiar with her. The ONLY time she panics is when a stranger comes to the door, or around her back yard. If strangers or unfamiliar company come over, we always put her outside just as we would with any dog we would have. As far as Iam concerned-------this dog was scared. I must say keeping a dog chained up forever, is much like keeping a human chained up, it will tend to drive them crazy after awhile. But fact is this, Pitbulls, if loved and treated properly are wonderful family dogs. They are loyal to their pack, much like a wolf, of course most dogs have this instinct. If a dog sees you as threat of course it will fight to protect its home. I happen to be an owner of 2 pitbulls, they are crate-trained and have never slept outside in their lives, my yard is fenced in and they have free-reign to do as they please, but at night they sleep inside my house. In bad weather they run around inside my house. I have two children, ages 7 and 3, these dogs have grown up with my kids and have never as much as barked or snarled at them. Every Iditarod race dog is checked by veterinarians pre-race and at more than 20 checkpoints. A dog with a serious injury or its beginnings is not allowed to continue. Mushers usually know, even before a veterinary check, whether a dog has an injury. Knowing their dogs as they do, they even know the attitudes of each of their dogs. Dogs do get injured in these races, but so do people doing sports they love. Dogs unable, or even no longer eager, to run are "dropped" at any checkpoint. There is a "Cripple" checkpoint in the northern (even year) route of the race. This checkpoint gets its name from the old gold mining district of Cripple; it has nothing to do with "crippled" dogs. We had a good starting spot in fifth; we came in with decent track position under the green flag run there for the pit stops. We had a great pit stop and with the green flag running so long, we went a lap down and we fought really, really hard to get up there to get the Lucky Dog, but eventually we got it. We were running 11th and just outside the top-10 with 30 laps to go and I was going by a lapped car on the outside in one and I got real loose and I started to slide up the track and smacked the fence on the exit and knocked the toe out of it, real bad. I completely agree with CSA. These days there are so few places where people can bring their dogs so we need to keep dog beach open. Dogs need some time outside off a leash and there are many parks but too few beaches where this can be done. I think they should have people watching for owners who do not pick up their dogs feces though so that they can be fined. If the vendors shack is such an eye SORE then why not try and get some volunteers together to make it look nicer Im sure many people who frequent the dog beach would be more than happy to help. I have not been to this beach yet myself but plan on going very soon and would be more than happy to volunteer my time to making the place look better. www.ocregister.com
