People Advocating Leash-free Zones (PALZ) is inviting dog owners to celebrate improvements to the Burgoyne Woods leash-free park Sept. 28.

The group is holding a barbecue and annual general meeting at the pavilion near the dog park, with proceeds going towards a new leash-free area.

PALZ co-chair Suzanne Mason said a pond in the park was drained and a swampy area filled with bark mulch to help keep dogs dry.

Last year, the City Council approved a pilot program to allow dogs in city parks. The existing ordinance says the only park where dogs are allowed in city parks is at the Palm Springs Dog Park.

The council decided it wanted to amend the citys ordinance to permanently allow dogs back into city parks. Dogs will have to remail on leashes and owners will be required to pick up pet waste.
