The plans of a local group to place an off-leash dog park in Lompocs Barton Park will be the subject of a public hearing at 7 p. m. Wednesday at the citys Parks and Recreation Commission meeting at the Lompoc Valley Community Center, 1501 E. Ocean Ave.
The proposed Barkin Park dog park, modeled after the off-leash WOOF PAC Park in Santa Maria, is planned for the western end of Barton Park, on Barton Avenue east of North O Street. It would feature a fenced-in grass area, with a divide between the larger and smaller dogs.

Officials recently approved the rules governing Schweitzer and two other county dog parks. Signs at Schweitzer should be posted on or by Thursday, according to Forest District Executive Director Monica A. Meyers.

Valley Park and the Wave Pool welcomed more than 600 dogs and 2,000 of their faithful owners at the end-of-summer affair. The dog park, which cost roughly usd. 2,000 to create, gave room for dogs and their owners to run free and play without the worry of "Rover" roaming away. In this carefree environment, pets and owners alike also had a chance to socialize and have fun without having to constantly tug on a leash.
