2008-08-08 Extra. Dog Bites Man. Read All About It.
Back in journalism school, I remember being told that the classic definition of a news story was Man Bites Dog. The notion was that if something totally predictable happens, like a dog biting a man, it aint really news. Only if it is unexpected does it have any real news value. By that standard, Hamdans conviction should be relegated to a one-sentence notice in the news briefs section, but Im guessing itll be page one tomorrow all over America: Terrorist Convicted.
After torturing and imprisoning Osama Bin Ladens chauffeur for seven years, did anyone expect anything but a quilty verdict--of lesser charges (to justify his treatment)--from this military tribunal What we really need to be asking is why taxpayer dollars are being spent on this shameful farce, which makes a joke of American justice around the world.
2008-08-08 Minnetonka dog debate: To leash or not to leash
Most dog owners at the park board meeting Wednesday said they appreciated the options offered in the revised ordinance. Many said problems about off-leash dogs had been overstated. But two dog owners who walk their dogs on-leash said all dogs should be on a leash in city parks.
Minnetonka began a review of park rules in May after complaints about unattended, free-roaming dogs jumping up on runners, trail walkers and a 2-year-old in a stroller. A community service officer suggested it was time for Minnetonka to curb its liberal dog privileges and create a fenced-in dog park for off-leash animals.

2008-08-07 Womans dogs grateful for story of animal cruelty
My boyfriend, Lee, and I got Riley from a shelter in Ohio two years ago. Lee was visiting his mom, who lives in Ohio and has a dog rescue. She asked him to go to the shelter to pick up some dogs for her, and he saw Riley huddled in the corner scared and dirty. He asked his mom if he could pick her up as well, but she was new to the rescue business and was afraid Riley would be hard to place and already had over 20 dogs in her care. A little worried about her fate, as this particular shelter in Ohio puts 70 dogs a week to sleep (no exaggeration. ), Lee told the shelter employee to call him if nobody wanted Riley. A few days later, he received a call that they still had Riley and were literally about to put her to sleep. He rushed over there and saved her life.
On the lighter side today . When Susie Rantz wanted to thank reporter Casey McNerthney for his post about on a 19-year-old woman who allegedly abused her dog, she sent him a photo of hers.

Animal welfare inspector Ben Lakomy said the dog, an 18-month-old male white and brindle english bull terrier crossbreed, was now in the care of the Wellington SPCA at the Newtown animal centre.
Mr Lakomy said the dog, named Toby by SPCA staff, shyly approached a member of the public in Halford Place at the end of Jackson Street shortly after 6. 30pm yesterday.
I have seen many skinny dogs in my three years as an inspector, but Tobys condition is on a whole new level, this is very disappointing to see," Mr Lakomy said.
