2008-09-02 Palin gets hearts beating on both sides :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: Richard Roeper

In other and more-telling respects, Palin sounds like Ted Nugent with a uterus. Shes a "hockey mom" and a crack shot, she ice-fishes, and her manly-man husband is a four-time Iron Dog snowmobile race champion. Shes a member of the NRA, shes "as pro-life as any candidate can be," shes no friend to the environment, and she opposes same-sex marriage.

On everything from the movies to the White Sox to breaking news in Chicago and around the country. Stay tuned. Keep checking back throughout the day for Roepers updates.

2008-09-01 Movies to fall for-TV and FILM

REQUIRED COURSES: Its Act Two this week for a lot of stars, as they re-invent or re-establish themselves. For example, Greg Kinnear -- finally recovered from "Auto Focus" -- goes back to bio with the idealist-against-Detroit story "Flash of Genius. " Millburns own Anne Hathaway escapes a recent rash of tabloid headlines -- and director Jonathan Demme returns at last to comedy -- in the better-off-wed story "Rachel Getting Married. " Bill Maher leaves politics behind to take on religion in his hooray-for-atheism screed "Religulous. " In the two movies Im most anticipating, Jeff Daniels is an impossible magazine editor in the worm-turns story "How To Lose Friends and Alienate People," while Michael Cera and the winning Kat Dennings find alt-rock love in "Nick and Norahs Infinite Playlist. 2008-08-28 Reagen Sulewski Forecasts the Weekend

Diesel has been on a steady decline as a draw ever since launching into the stratosphere with The Fast and the Furious in 2001. Hes had a few moderate hits since then, but his biggest result of the last few years was as the lead of a Disney film. Going the family route doesnt always kill your action cred (see: Ahnuld), but its a tough route to go unless youre at the top of your class without your core audience abandoning you. I dont know that Id call Diesel washed up per se, but hes definitely lost his place in the top tier, and sits in that realm of guys who have their movies premiere on Labor Day weekend (see: Jason Statham). Also starring Michelle Yeoh, Gerard Depardieu (who instantly comes to mind when I think action) and Charlotte Rampling, this is getting the full blitz treatment for advertising, but I think were

2008-08-30 DVDs: Burtons Nightmare drawing a new generation of fans : Entertainment : The Buffalo News

The story centers on another young boy, an amateur filmmaker named Victor Frankenstein, who brings his dog Sparky back to life with electricity (recalling another character named Frankenstein) after hes hit by a car. If youve seen the 1931 Frankenstein movie, youll appreciate Burtons attention to detail in recalling scenes from that Universal Studios classic.

Today, 15 years after the initial release of The Nightmare Before Christmas, you can still go into a mall and buy book bags, clothing and home accessories bearing the likeness of Jack the Pumpkin King, Sally, Zero the ghost dog and even Mr. Oogie Boogie.

IN RANCHO Cucamonga, typo-conscious reader Will Plunkett saw a homemade yard sign reading "Puppys usd. 20. " He found it sad that a pet owner would try to make a deal with strangers for his own dogs savings.

EVERYBODYS GETTING into the outdoor movie act. Ive mentioned that Pomona has been screening such movies as "Casablanca" and "Roman Holiday" in the plaza on Second Street on Friday nights in August.

Well, Claremonts Casa 425 Hotel in the (ahem) Village Square sent out a news release that its been displaying movies in its outdoor courtyard - but merely as a backdrop, without sound.

2008-08-30 My life as a dog-Telluride, CO-The Daily Planet

A German commandant (played by Willem Dafoe) recognizes Adam, and greets him thus: Adam Stein, funniest man in Germany. Do a trick for us. Do a dog. He complies, and its Adams ticket to survival. He apes a dog for the next year, eating out of a dog bowl, crawling on all fours, amusing the Jews including his wife as theyre herded off to the gas chambers.

Maybe all stories have been told because Paul Schrader, the guy who wrote Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, surveys the landscape of Hollywood and says this: Its hard to find anything fresh in the movies, particularly in our era of exhausted narrative possibilities. Virtually every idea is described as, Its the four couples on a road-trip movie. They have a category for everything.

2008-08-30 ROTTEN TOMATOES: Critics Consensus: Babylon Condemned, Traitor Fails

Im surprised "Babylon" is getting smashed like it is. "Disaster Movie": -99. 99999999. I can dream. I hope this tanks horrifically. Ive seen Seltzerturds previous movies and there were four laughs combined; and all of them were in "Meet The Spartans". (Awful, but not as soul deadingly as "Epic Movie" or "Date Movie") Although, I have to admit that turning the chipmunks into demonic beings is worthy have a half-assed chuckle.
