The bill is the Rendell administrations latest effort to rid Pennsylvania of its reputation among animal-welfare advocates as a haven for so-called "puppy mills" - large-scale breeding operations that house neglected and abused dogs in cramped, unsanitary cages. It would impose specific penalties for criminal convictions and make a host of other changes intended to provide better living conditions and adequate health care in larger kennels.

Under the legislation introduced in May, commercial kennels would be defined as ones that either sell any dogs to dealers or pet shops, or sell or transfer more than 60 dogs a year. Those facilities would be required to house dogs in larger cages with solid flooring instead of wire flooring, give the animals opportunities to exercise outdoors, and provide regular veterinary examinations, among other things.

2008-06-13 Adders warm to the noble game of golf News

I am not surprised that more are being spotted, as last year was good for breeding and we have had a relatively mild winter, so probably a lot more adders will have survived hibernation.

People should be on the lookout for them and stick to the paths. The adders do try to get out of the way, but they can bite if a dog sniffs or corners them. "

Ive never heard of anyone being bitten by an adder, although a couple of dogs have been killed over the past few years. "

2008-06-04 Breeding ground for communalism

It is in short neoliberalisms own specific and spontaneously-generated defender. To imagine that we can one day get rid of this dog even though neoliberalism remains intact is fatuous. To imagine that neoliberalism itself one day will help us get rid of this dog (by ushering in modernity that overcomes the backwardness on which Hindutva thrives) is equally fatuous. The dog can be got rid of only when neoliberalism itself is overcome.
