2 If outside when approaching an unleashed dog, it may be best to avoid contact. Stop. Cross the street, perhaps. This is particularly true with breeds like Dobermans, which were bred for security jobs. A call to Animal Control may be appropriate, said Edwards. Professional dog handlers may want to approach and help locate the dogs owner from collar information, especially when approaching a dog from a less aggressive breed, but general members of the public take some risk when doing so.

2008-06-09 Mixed-breeds rule, but not if youre rich and famous The Courier-Mail

With a large number of cross-breeds in its shelters, the RSPCA is always willing to promote the humble bitzer, pointing out that dogs from mixed marriages are not as high maintenance as purebred animals and, if youre not after a so-called designer dog, theyre also cheaper.

The figures may be dragged down by the fact that mixed breeds account for an estimated 45 per cent of the dog population in Australia.

RSPCA Queensland spokesman Michael Beatty says mixed-breed dogs also often suffer fewer medical problems than some pure breeds.

2008-06-03 Time for city to act

Another truly unfortunate thing about this story is the fact that Tricia Segobias dog was running at large and NOT visiting the other womans yard. Not only was the dog at large, it had also been in the yard of the dog that killed it. Its called protecting its territory. Its really sad that someone has to make a truly miserable incident even more miserable. I hope that when Ms. Segobia gets the laws changed that she is the first to realize that her dog could have been saved had it not been running around the neighborhood. The dog that killed was in a fenced yard. And followed Ms. Segobias dog OUT of its own territory. Remember Mr. Kelley, there really are two sides to every story. It saddens me that the young adults involved in this are having to bear the embarassment of having this published so many times. They really do feel

2008-05-31 Bill would give towns more control over dog laws ( ) Courier Times

Since (the attack), people have called, e-mailed and stopped me on the street with other horrific stories regarding vicious dogs, Krieger said at the press conference. Ive heard so many stories of the same thing happening to other dogs who have unfortunately lost their lives and children that have been mauled by dogs who have careless owners. . There needs to be stricter guidelines and penalties for people who own dogs that dont properly control them.

2008-05-23 EADT - Labrador gives owner bumper litter

Lisa, who lives with partner Paul Bryant, 40, plans to keep one of the puppies to breed. The couple met in Australia, so thought Oz was an appropriate name for their 3-year-old Labrador. They also share their home with Jack Russell, Jodie.

The part-time dog trainer said: When we took Oz for the pregnancy test it came back negative, but the vet was sure he felt something so predicted she would have a small litter like two or three puppies.

Contrary to the violent reputation of some of his breed, Zeus only aggressive tendencies are toward tasty treats or little children, whom he has been known to knock down trying to give a loving swipe of his big pink tongue.

He is the only dog I know that can unwrap a doughnut from a bag or a wrapper and eat it," Jason Avis says as he watches the encounter.

Today, it seems to be more of a question of whos walking whom, as the dog he occasionally refers to as his "son" pulls Massey along in his exuberance.

A general assignment reporter, has covered animals and their people across the state of California (and occasionally beyond. ) She chronicled the Oakland Zoos attempts to hand-raise a baby African elephant and followed the Los Angeles Zoos LA-born gorilla, Caesar, on his trek to a new home at Zoo Atlanta several years ago. Preferring to get up close and personal with her subjects, she once fed corn cobs to the LA Zoos now-deceased elephant, Gita (no connection between her demise and the feeding) and spent hours interviewing pit bulls at the Laurel Canyon Dog Park. Currently animal-less, she still insists on plying people with anecdotes about her cat, Arnold, who died ten years ago.

2008-05-11 Deconstructing Carmel Newsweek My Turn

Growing up, we always had litters of well-bred German-shepherd puppies tumbling around the yard like in those Purina Puppy Chow commercials. But Carmel was different from the dutiful shepherds, who obeyed my moms every command. Either Carmel was untrainable or my mom was a sucker for his breezy indifference. Either way, he won her love in a way the shepherds never could. Soon my sister and I had been dispatched to some distant kennel in my mothers world view.

Greyfriars Bobby breed in danger

A memorial to Scotlands most famous dog, Greyfriars Bobby, has helped to highlight that the breed is in danger, event organisers have said.

The event was organised by the Skye Terrier Club which wanted to highlight the point that the breed was in danger because of the falling number of puppies being born.

A walk took place from Edinburgh Castle to the graveyard where the dogs master was buried 150 years ago. A wreath laying and blessing also took place.
