Lovejoy was on the phone with his wife when he arrived back home at 9 a. m. and left the dog sleeping in the back of his patrol SUV, according to a Maricopa County Sheriffs Office report. An hour later, his stepson called saying he was in a minor car accident and needed help, and 30 minutes later Lovejoys wife said she was having an anxiety attack at work and needed him.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio was deposed, and in June, Lovejoys attorneys filed a motion to dismiss the case, claiming Arpaio pursued charges against Lovejoy in a quest for publicity while previously ignoring the deaths of three of his own agencys police dogs. The Sheriffs Office dismissed the claim as "legal maneuvering" and called the cases "apples and oranges. "

2008-08-15 A chupacabra caught on tape Top Stories News for Tucson, Arizona
The video shows some type of creature, which looks similar to that of a dog or coyote, running in broad daylight as Corp. Brandon Reidel followed it in his car. But while the animal may have some similarities, Reidel said from his view, it didnt look like a dog or a coyote to him.
While Sheriff Joe Zavesky told KENS-TV that he loves what the chupacabra sightings have done for DeWitt County, he said he believes in all likelihood that the creature was most likely some type of coyote-dog hybrid. However, he hasnt appeared to rule it out totally.

2008-08-15 When beloved pet dies, law should stay out of it The Indianapolis Star
I am a native Hoosier, and I learned to love animals from my now-deceased parents, who grew up on farms near Muncie. But I have often thought about how differently many Americans relate to their animals today than they did when my parents grew up on farms. Ten years ago, I read a news story about a pet owner who was suing for emotional distress because someone negligently killed his dog. My parents generation would never dream of this kind of lawsuit.

Once an animal is brought into regular contact with humans it all changes. They become "habituated" to the presence of humans and cease to fear them. This is actually quite a dangerous state for an animal that is in the wild, as seeking out humans could easily lead to their death. At the wildlife rehab center where I have volunteered for 6 years we are given strict orders to avoid any behaviors that tend to habituate the animals (like talking to them), but its nearly impossible with some species. Certain animals become accustomed to a human presence very easily, but one must always remember that habituated is not the same thing as tame. Habituated animals are still wild and may be aggressive and unpredictable.
