2008-11-18 No time frame set for India-specific safeguards agreementBy 2012, 7200 MW will be available. With 2500 MW from fast breeder reactor and 10,000 MW from pressurised heavy water reactor and few thousands from imported reactors, we would be in a comfortable position to produce even more than 20,000 MW," Kakodkar said. www.zeenews.com
India has not set a time-line on signing of the India-specific safeguards agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as the discussions on additional protocol are not yet completed, Atomic Energy Commission chairman Anil Kakodkar said here on Monday. - No time frame set for India-specific safeguards agreement
2008-11-18 TOSBF TOSHIBA TO EXPAND FAST BREEDER REACTOR RandD FACILITYLiquid sodium is the substance used as the coolant in fast breeder reactors. By increasing the flow volume by such an extent, Toshiba can progress with the testing of important reactor components, including the large electromagnetic pumps that circulate the coolant, as well as steam-generating equipment and measuring instrumentation. Japans effort to develop fast breeders is led in the private sector by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. (TSE:7011). By strengthening its RandD operations, Toshiba hopes to be in a better position to promote the adoption of its own proprietary technologies for the next generation of fast breeders. www.tradingmarkets.com

2008-11-17 That N-powered feeling- Hindustan TimesWhen the India-US civil nuclear cooperation agreement was being progressed, the main focus was on India liberating itself from the technology apartheid to which it had been subjected since its first Pokhran nuclear test in 1974. With the technology denial having been removed through the unconditional waiver of the guidelines of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), India has concluded a framework agreement to get French reactors constructed in India. The signing of the India-US 123 Agreement into law by President Bush has opened the door for setting up US reactors also in India. In December it is expected agreements will be signed during the visit of Russian President Medvedev for additional reactors of the type now under construction in Koodankulam in Tamil Nadu. 2008-11-16 The Hindu News Update ServiceMW, out of 20,000 MW, will be based on natural uranium from the indigenious reactors. And 2,000 MW is expected to come out of fast breeder reactors which uses plutonium, which are also indigeniously designed," he added. There has been offers to India from French company Areva to supply 1,600 MW reactors," Ramesh said adding that the Russian and American companies are also in the fray to supply nuclear fuel technology. We have already installed 2,000 MW capacity nuclear plant at Koodankulam in Tamil Naidu with Russian technology," the Minister said. Sodium as a heat transfer medium is a concept that comes from the nuclear industry, with liquid sodium used as a coolant in the first generation of fast breeder reactors, none of which, it seems, are now operating. Interest in using it as a heat transfer medium in the nuclear industry, however, continues, not only as liquid, but also as a combination of liquid and vapour. Sodium boils at 883C at atmospheric pressure, but produces significant amounts of vapour at somewhat lower temperatures. According to one report, using a combination of liquid and vapour allows an enthalpy gain for heat transfer purposes of 4933kJ/kg about three and a half times what is possible with liquid sodium. While explosively reactive with water, sodium vapour is routinely used in low- and high-pressure sodium vapour motorway and street lights all over www.eurekamagazine.co.uk

The United States and the Republic of Kazakhstan reached a new milestone in a multiyear joint project to irreversibly decommission the Soviet-era BN-350 fast breeder reactor located at the Kazakhstani port of Aktau on the Caspian Sea. The participating governments completed a sodium processing facility that will be used to dispose of coolant from the reactor core. This action demonstrates and reinforces the strength of the U. S. -Kazakhstani strategic relationship, and our joint commitment to preventing the proliferation of nuclear materials. www.state.gov
